Rather (part 1)

Význam

Rather používame vo význame “pomerne”, “dosť”. Zdôrazňujeme ním prídavné mená, ktorým dávame významy: viac ako zvyčajne, viac ako som očakával, viac ako som chcel. Často ho využívame pri kritike, sklamaní, alebo ak je niečo prekvapujúce.

• How was the film? – Rather good.  I was surprised.
• She sings rather  well. People often think she’s a professional.
• It’s rather warm in here. Let’s open a window.

Slovosled a členy

Rather zvyčajne dávame pred členy, ale môže ísť aj za neurčitý člen a/an ak je použité aj prídavné meno.

• That’s rather the impression I wanted to give.
• He’s rather a fool.
• Jane’s had rather a good idea (or Jane’s had a rather good idea.)

Množné číslo

Ak je podstatné meno v množnom čísle, slovo rather pred ním nepoužívame.

• They’re rather fools. = WRONG

Výnimku tvorí podstatné meno v množnom čísle pred ktorým je prídavné meno.

• They are rather good ideas. = RIGHT

Rather than

Výraz rather than používame na vyjadrenie preferencií – “radšej ako”. Používa sa vždy s dvomi rovnakými formami v paralelných štruktúrach.

Príklad paralelnej štruktúry:

• She likes driving, hiking and running in the woods.
• She likes driving, hiking and to run in the woods. – nie je paralelná štruktúra, pretože posledný tvar nie je v tej istej forme.

To znamená, že s dvomi príd. menami,  príslovkami, podst. menami, neurčitkami, alebo –ing formami.

• I’d call her hair chestnut rather than brown.
• I’d prefer to go in August rather than in July.
• We ought to invest in machinery rather than buildings.
• I prefer starting early rather than leaving things to the last minute.

Ak hlavná časť súvetia obsahuje neurčitok s to ( …try to…, …. decide to… atď.), po rather than musí nasledovať neurčitok bez to, alebo –ing forma slovesa.

• I decided to write rather than phone/phoning.
• Rather than use/using the last of my cash, I decided to write a cheque.
