Predložky until/till, to, by a before

Until a till

Veľmi častá otázka študentov: „Aký je rozdiel medzi until a till?“. Obe slová znamenajú to isté. Môžu byť použité ako predložky alebo spojky. Till je však neformálne.

• I won’t expect you until/till midnight.
• I’ll wait until/till I hear from you.
• The new timetable will remain in operation until June 30.

Until a to

Predložka to môže byť v rovnakom význame ako until. V tomto prípade ju používame vo väzbe from…to.

• I usually work from nine to (or… from nine until/till five.)

To vo význame until tiež používame ak odpočítavame dni/týždne/mesiace atď. do nejakej udalosti v budúcnosti.

• It’s another three weeks to the holidays. (or… until/till holidays.)

V iných prípadoch predložku to nepoužívame.

• I waited for her until six o’clock, but she didn’t come. (NOT …to six o’clock…)

Vzdialenosť a kvantita

Until/ till používame len ako hovoríme o čase. Ak rozprávame o vzdialenosti, používame to, as far as alebo up to, ktoré taktiež môžeme použiť aj pri kvantitách.

• We walked as far as/ up to the edge of the forest.
• The minibus can hold up to thirteen people.
• You can earn up to $500 a week in this job.

Časy s until

Ak chceme vyjadriť budúcnosť po slove until, používame prítomný čas.

• I’ll wait until she gets here. (NOT … until she will get here.)

Ak po until použijeme predprítomný alebo predminulý čas, vyjadrujeme, že daná akcia bude/ bola ukončená.

• You’re not going home until you’ve finished the report.
• I waited until the rain had stopped.

Until a by

Until nám vyjadruje, že daný stav alebo akcia bude trvať/ pokračovať do určitého momentu. By nám vyjadruje, že daný stav alebo akcia sa stane pred alebo v danom momente.

• Can I stay until the weekend? – Yes, but you’ll have to leave by Monday midday at the latest.

• Can you repair my watch if I leave it here until Saturday? – No, but we can do it by next Tuesday.

Until a before

Not + until znamená to isté ako not + before.

• I will not be seeing Judy until/ before

Oba výrazy until aj before používame na vyjadrenie ako ďaleko (časovo) nejaká udalosť je.

• It’ll be ages until/ before we meet again.
• There’s only six weeks left until/ before Christmas.
