Gender

Anglický jazyk veľmi nerieši gramatické rody… Ak hovoríme o ľuďoch, používame he alebo she a ak o veciach, používame it. Existujú však aj výnimky.

ANIMALS, CARS, SHIPS AND COUNTRIES

Aj pre zvieratá môžeme niekedy použiť he alebo she, najmä ak chceme vyjadriť, že aj oni majú osobnosť, inteligenciu alebo pocity. Preto je bežné domáce (aj hospodárske) zvieratá nazývať he alebo she.

• Once upon a time there was a rabbit called Joe. He lived…
• Go and find the cat and put her out.

V týchto prípadoch používame zámeno who namiesto which.

• She had an old dog who always slept in her bed.

Niektorí ľudia používajú she aj pre svoje autá, motorky atď. Námorníci používajú she pre svoje ľode.

• How is your new car? – Terrific. She’s running beautifully.
• The ship’s struck a rock. She’s sinking!

Niekedy môžeme použiť she aj pre krajiny, čo je bežné v modernej angličtine.

• France has decided to increase its trade with Romania. (OR …. her trade …)

HE OR SHE

Zvyčajne sa v Angličtine, najmä vo formálnom štýle, využívali he/ him/ his ak gramatický rod nebol z vety zrejmý a podstatné meno mohlo vyjadrovať buď mužský alebo ženský rod.

• If a student is ill, he must send his medical certificate to the College office.
• If I ever find the person who did that, I’ll kill him.

Veľa ľudí to považuje za sexistické a preto sa často používa he or she/ him or her/ his or her.

UNISEX – THEY

V neformálnom štýle často používame they namiesto he or she  a to najmä po slovách ako somebody, anybody, nobody, person. Toto použitie je niekedy považované za nesprávne, ale je bežne používané vo formálnom, ale aj neformálnom štýle.

• If anybody wants my ticket, they can have it.
• There’s somebody at the door. – Tell them I’m out.
• When a person gets married, they have to start thinking about their responsibilities.
