FAIRLY

Slovo fairly nedáva prídavným menám vysokú intenzitu. Ak poviete niekomu, že je fairly nice alebo fairly clever, veľmi ich nepotešíte.

  • How was the film? – Fairly good. Not the best one I’ve seen this year.
  • I speak Russian fairly well – enough for everyday purposes.

 

 

QUITE

 

Slovo quite je intenzívnejšie ako fairly.

  • How was the film? – Quite good. You ought to go.
  • It’s quite a difficult book – I had trouble with it.
  • He’s lived in St Petersburg, so he speaks Russian quite well.

Quite môžeme použiť aj pred slovesami a podstatnými menami a tým upraviť ich význam.

  • I quite enjoyed myself at your party.
  • The room was quite a mess.

RATHER

 

Rather  je intenzívnejšie ako quite. Používame ho v situáciách ak chceme vyjadriť: viac ako zvyčajne, viac ako som očakával, viac ako som chcel…

  • How was the film? – Rather good.. I was surprised.
  • Maurice speaks Russian rather well. People often think he is Russian.
  • I think I’ll put the heating on. It’s rather cold.
  • I’ve had rather a long day.

Rather môžeme použiť aj pred slovesami (najmä slovesá, ktoré vyjadrujú myšlienky a pocity) a podstatnými menami a tým upraviť ich význam.

  • I rather think we’re going to lose.
  • It was rather a disappointment.
  • She rather likes gardening.

PRETTY

Pretty sa používa najmä v neformálnom štýle a je podobné ako rather,  ale upravuje význam prídavným menám a príslovkám.

  • How’s things? – Pretty good. You OK?
  • You’re driving pretty fast.

Pretty well znamená takmer.

  • I’ve pretty well finished.
