False friends, alebo 3 slová, ktoréprekladáte nesprávne

V dnešnom príspevku sa pozrieme na 3 slová, ktoré študenti prekladajú nesprávne a to z dôvodu, že tieto slová znejú podobne ako v slovenčine. V angličtine sa tento jav nazýva “False friends” – slová, ktoré znejú podobne v dvoch jazykoch, ale majú rozličný význam.

Control/check
Slovo “control” neznamená skontrolovať,ale mať kontrolu/moc nad niečím, riadiť alebo ovládať niečo, niekoho. Ak chceme povedať skontroluj, prejdi niečo (očami) musíme použiť slovo “check”.

• „I check my students‘ homework, but I can’t control what they do!“
• Can you check my homework?
• The inspector checked my ticket.

• If you can’t control your dog, put it on a lead!
• This button controls the temperature.
• He lost control of the car and crashed.

Actual/current
“Actual” nemá nič spoločné s časom. Toto slovo znamená skutočný, reálny a teda preklad spojenia “actual problem“ = “real problem“, nie je to aktuálny problém, ale skutočný problém. Slovo aktuálny, súčasný sa v angličtine povie “current”= connected to now.

• The actual problem is that we can’t get there on time.
• The actual cost of the repair was much higher than the estimate.

• She started her current job 2 years ago.
• My current employer is American.
• He doesn’t get on well with his current roommate.

Actually/Currently

• Actually, I’d rather spend the evening at home
• I call her Aunt Emily, but she is actually my cousin, not my aunt.
• Was he actually avoiding conversation with you?

• This is currently my favorite car.
• Bosch is currently in Miami.
• I am currently looking for an experienced English teacher.
